Right now, we all need somewhere we can unwind and relax when we leave the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Even if you’re working from home, you still need a space you can go to release tension and gain inner peace. How about setting up a relaxation space at home? It’s quick and easy and can be done in five simple steps.
Ensure that the space you choose has enough space for lunging, stretching and appropriate furnishings (we’ll get to those soon). Also, keep the space clean and free of clutter, technology or anything that would disturb your peace. So, a small space under the stairs, or on the veranda, in the living room or on a large step landing are good choices for your relaxation spot.
Set up proper lighting and have good views
Good lighting is needed for a good relaxing period. You’d be surprised how much more relaxed you feel when you have natural light coming in through a window. You can also use special bulbs in lamps that mimic sunlight, such as Halogen bulbs, which are a variation of incandescent. They give the closest approximation of natural daylight, known as “white light.” Views are just as important. If your meditation space is facing a busy street or a noisy neighbour this can affect how well your body relaxes. Choose a space that has views of trees outside, the sea, mountains, the sky or even your garden outside.
Bring nature inside with plants
An easy way to bring peace into your peace is to, as cliché as it sounds, be one with nature. Plants have natural soothing powers that allow you to feel relaxed. Choose low-maintenance plants that thrive well indoors or in shaded areas. Plants also remind you of life and can bring a positive aura to your relaxation time.
Add some fragrances
If you use soothing candles with subtle smells or incense sticks infused with mild essential oils, you can bring tranquillity to your space. White, lightly-scented candles are great for use versus bold smells that may be too strong for relaxing. You can also dab a few drops of essential oil in a diffuser for added pleasant fragrance as you unwind.
Choose neutral colours and comfy furnishings
Shades of beige and cream, as well as, white and grey are ideal colours for your meditation space. Whether it’s the paint, the furnishings or the accent pieces, avoid using bold colours such as red, orange or yellow. Cool blues and greens also work well. Be sure to have comfortable cushions, blankets, floor rugs or exercise mats for a cosy relaxation session.
If you’re looking to set up an area in your home to use for unwinding, then these five steps are sure to get you there.
